There is an old line in advertising: "Half my marketing budget is wasted — I just do not know which half." A century later, most businesses in Suriname still cannot answer that question. And you cannot improve what you cannot see.
Why attribution is harder than it looks
A customer rarely arrives from one clean source. They might hear your name from a friend, see an Instagram post, ask ChatGPT for a recommendation, Google you, read a blog article, and only then WhatsApp you. Which one gets the credit? Your analytics will say "direct" — which tells you nothing.
Perfect attribution does not exist. But "good enough to make better decisions" absolutely does — and that is all you actually need.
The simple system that works
- Just ask. The single most underrated tool: a "How did you find us?" field on your contact form, and the same question on every call. Low tech, remarkably accurate.
- Use UTM links. Tag the links you share in campaigns so analytics can tell them apart.
- Track conversions, not visits. Set up your analytics to record enquiries and form submissions, not just pageviews.
- Watch the trend, not the day. Single days are noise. Compare months.
- Connect it to revenue. A channel that brings 50 cheap leads is worth less than one that brings 3 real clients.
The new blind spot: AI
Increasingly, people ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude for a recommendation before they ever open Google. When they then type your name into a browser, your analytics records it as "direct traffic" — and the AI that actually sent them is invisible. The only reliable way to catch this today is to ask. This is exactly why the "how did you find us?" question matters more now than it did five years ago.
What to do with the answer
Once you know which channels bring real customers, the decision gets easy: double down on what works, cut what does not, and stop guessing. That is the entire point — not a beautiful dashboard, but better decisions.
What is the easiest way to know where my leads come from?
Ask them. A simple "How did you find us?" field on your contact form, plus the same question on calls, will tell you more than most analytics setups — especially now that AI referrals are invisible in analytics.
Why does my analytics show so much "direct" traffic?
Because the source was untrackable: someone typed your name in, clicked a link in WhatsApp, or was recommended by an AI assistant. It usually means your brand and word-of-mouth are working — but you need to ask people to know for sure.
Do I need expensive attribution software?
No. For most businesses in Suriname, proper conversion tracking plus asking every lead how they found you is enough to make good decisions. Complexity is not the same as clarity.
